We offer two fundraising rides for cyclists per year: SB250 is our 250 mile road ride event and SdR is our annual mountain bike race. These rides represent a beautiful partnership between those with ultra-mobility and those with limited-mobility – riders gift their time, skill and energy during training and rides to lift up those affected by Spina Bifida. In turn, families living with Spina Bifida inspire and lift up the cyclists and volunteers who create our fundraising events.
SB250 is a truly memorable ride from Edinburg, Texas to San Antonio, Texas! Over two grueling days, cyclists grind away in the south Texas heat and are then welcomed over the finish line by families who live with Spina Bifida.
SdR is a two-day mountain bike race for all ages and skill levels and is part of the TMBRA series.
Living with Spina Bifida can be hard. From physical limitations to lifestyle modifications, Spina Bifida affects the entire family. For parents, the trials of raising a child with Spina Bifida can have devastating physical, emotional and financial impacts. Caretakers often watch their children suffer while spending countless hours navigating the medical and insurance systems, and dealing with homes and schools that are unable to accommodate barrier-free or educational needs. While most of us may never truly understand how it feels to live with Spina Bifida, we can still choose to do good. We can choose to help. And we can always choose to smile.
Doing hard things helps us appreciate the good things! While riding SB250 in the Texas heat or pushing through the SdR race is indeed grueling, we are reminded that it pales in comparison to the what people who live with Spina Bifida endure every day. And through Suzannah Smiles and our communal efforts, we can do hard things to raise awareness and funds to make their lives better!
When we cross the finish line, hand over a check, or deliver a custom wheelchair, we know we have made a difference in the lives of those affected by Spina Bifida. When we join forces to help people with Spina Bifida reach their potential and empower them to live the best life they can, we find comfort in knowing we are change makers.
